National Park Drive Residence

Mid-Century Style Resurfaced

Most often, the 1950s come to mind when someone talks about “Mid-Century.” The era spanned the mid-40s to 50s - some argue longer, beginning in the 30s and lasting until the mid-60s. Mid-century style, often referred to as mid-century modern, is a design and architectural aesthetic that emerged in the middle of the 20th century. It is characterized by a clean and minimalist approach, featuring sleek, simple lines, organic shapes, and a focus on functionality. This style emphasizes the use of natural materials like wood, often in warm tones, and incorporates innovative materials such as plastic and metal.

For this client, the residence on National Park Drive was stripped to the bare bones. Exterior walls were removed and replaced with windows, exposing the hillside and allowing nature and natural light inside. The drop ceiling was lifted to expose the structural beams and rafters that support the roof. The kitchen was designed to help visually support and frame the architecture. Wood melamine, gold metal details and fixtures, and a glass cabinetry pantry and oven wall work beautifully to reflect nature outside, creating movement and interest from outside to inside.

The overall aesthetic of this residence communicates a sense of timelessness, blending the classic with the contemporary, allowing functionality to sit comfortably alongside form, and making it a perennially popular design choice.
